Teaching and Learning in Compton began as a documentary project on Compton's Dominguez High School girls' soccer team. No one seemed to know exactly but it was generally agreed upon that they had not won a game in ten years. Compton is not your typical soccer town. The surrounding, more gentile and better cared for suburbs of Los Angeles had much more support. Not just in attitude, but in money. The uniforms were the first distinction. The Compton girls began the season playing in t-shirts. The other teams had the nice professional-looking nylon Nike jerseys. Despite the stage-setting for a Cinderella-story season, the Dominguez High girls' soccer team failed utterly, failing to win one regular season game. And the documentary would have ended there -- the failure of a public school system, the reinforcement of the girls' perceptions that they were destined to lose -- if it had not been for the events of that school year. The racial riots began about two weeks into the filming of the soccer documentary. Blacks vs. Latinos. The nonchalance of most of the faculty and the school administration begged the question: why is this happening on such a regular basis? And these weren't small skirmishes; children were being beat severely by their peers. And so it began - the investigation into what it was like to attend school and to teach at an inner-city public school where violence is not only the norm but to some degree expected. What was it like to deal with an administration that preferred to sweep incidents under the proverbial rug instead of honestly addressing the school's most troubling issues? With Teaching and Learning in Compton the singular hope and goal was to convey to a world that purposefully or accidentally avoids places like Dominguez High School what sacrifices and heartaches take place there on a regular basis, as a teacher in the film says, "...day in and day out."

Details of Career Preparations: Internships, Research, Resumes,... Academic, verbal & non-verbal skills, organization skills, clarity, attention to detail, broad view, building confidence, mentoring, networking, presentations / reports, timeliness, excellence. Knowing the probability for success or failure of an application encourages one to pursue several viable options at the same time. The Application: Read it thoroughly and type your responses. Pass it by your mentors before sending it. Personal Statement GRE? Find out tests you need to take and take them early. Send ALL Transcripts to BOTH University AND other (e.g. medical school) program. Letters of Recommendation: Choose faculty from classes where you earned an “A” so that it can be said that you were at the top of your class. Letters are as important for what they don’t say as for what they say. Your Résumé (curriculum vitae) A curriculum vitae should have the form of the example given, including degrees, places and dates, jobs held, teaching experience, fellowships, grants, honors, and professional societies and may also include the names and addresses of 3 - 5 professionals in the field who have agreed to write letters of reference. It should NOT include marital status or the number of children. Work/research experience, publications, and references count heavily. A draft resume should be revised with help of an advisor, mentor, advisor, and peers. Use the standard format for professional information typical for your specific field of study. A cover letter (or personal statement) should always be sent with the résumé. Tailor it to the individual employer/application. The letter should be confident and clear. It should imply familiarity and respect for the scholarship program / institution/laboratory. Excuses or negative statements (e.g. “my father was poor and abusive”) suggest that the candidate has been rejected often before, and invites further rejection. Institutions and departments of distinction have pride in their reputations which can be complimented or insulted with a turn of phrase. Make it clear that your documented talents in their area of expertise would complement well the strengths and interests of their department. Do not mention any family considerations for choosing that employer; e.g. "I want to be near my boyfriend" or "We like the beach". http://fr.euronews.com/ "On me disaient ok, vous avez des compétences, on veux travailler avec vous. April 13, 2011 - Led by members of the faculty union, about 200 students at California State University, Dominguez Hills, took part in a rally Wednesday to protest tuition hikes, faculty layoffs and what the protesters called "management bloat." The event, which was coordinated to occur with protests at CSU system's 23 campuses, culminated at the Carson campus with a student-led march to the office of President Mildred Garcia. The primary purpose of the protests across the state was to apply pressure to the campus presidents and CSU Chancellor Charles Reed. "We're asking Reed to put the money where the students are - in classes and student services," said David Bradfield, president of the Dominguez Hills chapter of the California Faculty Association. Bradfield, a music professor, also accused Reed of using the financial circumstances of the state as an excuse to break unions. On the Dominguez Hills campus, the guest speaker was the fiery Rev. Eric Lee, president and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles, who tried his best to rile up a mellow crowd of students. "There needs to be a movement to take place to stop them from robbing you of your education," he shouted into a microphone in the student quad. "We are the slaves of plantation capitalism and they are the slavemasters. That needs to change. We need to start a revolution." Lee also went after the 23 campus presidents, many of whom - such as Garcia - earn about $300,000 a year. "Do you mean to tell me, that in California, that $300,000 for 23 presidents and $500,000 a year for a chancellor - that they can't take cuts to their own salaries to make sure that we have classes?" he said. The protests come at a time when the CSU system is bracing for a $500 million budget cut, proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown, due to the state's financial crisis. The cut amounts to about 18 percent of the CSU system's entire budget - and would double if tax extensions are not passed. The tuition hikes are meant to recoup some of the lost state funding, college officials say. In November, the CSU's governing board raised tuition by 15 percent, meaning that, beginning next school year, tuition will be $5,500 annually. Greg Saks, the vice president for university advancement on the Dominguez Hills campus, said the $5,500 amount is still the lowest tuition of all the nation's state universities. "But it still makes things very challenging," he said. As for the salaries of the CSU presidents, Saks said they are significantly below the national average. He said he agrees that the cuts to the CSU system will be devastating. "The master plan of California was set up so that if you meet the qualifications, you will have access to high-quality higher education, and unfortunately, with the drops of state support, sometimes that promise isn't being kept," he said. At Wednesday's event in Carson, student Yesenia Ortega, who graduated last year from Port of Los Angeles High School, said she was initially on track to finish her psychology degree in three years, but now, because of the budget cuts, it will probably take her four. Blake Deyden, a computer-science major and a recent graduate from the Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, was unimpressed by the fervor of the crowd. "I thought it would be more active," he said. "I thought we were actually going to go yell out." After the main event in the quad, the protest heated up: About 100 students marched to the fourth floor of the administration office, demanding to meet with Garcia, the president. The students were told she was in a meeting, and wrote a letter on the spot listing their demands, which they delivered to an administrative assistant. That portion of the protest was organized by a student group called Students for Quality Education, not the faculty union, the protesters said. Bradfield of the Dominguez Hills faculty union said the campus has lost about 100 nontenured instructors in recent years, while gaining about 1,000 students.

Care of infants who are born as early as 24 weeks is delicate and challenging. This project has taken the antebellum Negro Spiritual (a group of about 6000 works) and combined binaural beat techniques to support the brain health and development of our most vulnerable babies. Presentation will include study protocol, specifications for the music, development of the music, and the current theory of the Negro Spiritual music's impact on brain structure. Based on the current research model the motor, visual, auditory and somatosensory cortex, the frontal-parietal religious circuit including the dorsolateral prefrontal, dorsomedial frontal and medial parietal cortex, the fronto-temporal network including the ventral and dorsal streams with multimodal and stepwise integration of brain response are all involved. _____________________________________________________ Melinda H.
